Sunday 13th SeptemberToi Poeneke, 67 Abel Smith StPot Luck Dinner, 6.30pm. Concert 7.30pmThis month in lieu of our friday night session we are trying something different for a "Bit of Spice". AR has invited Levin Folk Club to put together a showcase performance for us. To get the most out of the evening, and to accommodate their long drive home at the end, we will begin with a pot-luck meal at 6.30. Levin FC will then play from 7.30- 8.30pm. then after a short break we will continue the evening. We aim to finish up by 10. If you wish to be considered to do an act in the AR 'half' please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Priority will be given to artists unlikely to have been seen by Levin folkies...though not necessarily exclusively! The Levin club members performing at Toi Poneke will be: Keith Heginbotham - Wellington folkies will remember Keith and Sue Heginbotham and their time at the Wellington Folk Centre. Keith is now centred in Otaki and has been for many years associated with the Levin Folk Club where his strong repertoire of song is most appreciated. He has been influenced by John Prine and Judy Small and sings many of their songs with great feeling and a strong message, accompanying himself on guitar. Ivan Johnston is an Irishman from County Down. Though having lived a very long time in New Zealand, he retains strong ties with his homeland which he still visits regularly. Ivan has been singing ever since he can remember and plays guitar. ( He also has a wicked Celtic sense of humour!) Brian Falkner hasn’t been a folkie that long - his roots are country music, but hey - he’s learning a few folk tunes! Brian has been playing guitar just a couple of years and accompanies himself very well. Expect easy ballads with a country touch. Our band we’re bringing is Golowan ( you’ll have to ask Han to explain that name! ). Golowan consists of Han Roeters, Ian Todd and Charlie Boyce. Han is from the Netherlands originally - he’s the band’s bodhran and recorder player. Ian Todd is an ex-Wellingtonian - also plays bodrhan and guitar. Charlie plays lead guitar. Expect some great harmonies (they all sing) and humour. Andrew Salter also started off as a country music singer, has been playing guitar since his early teens, and also plays banjo and mandolin. He has been performing at country music clubs in Auckland since the early 1970s (was a founding member of Eastern Districts Country Music Club, Pakuranga ). He succumbed to folk music in the 1990s when he moved to Levin. Influences include Norman Blake and Tom Paxton. Anne Campbell is the one of foundation members of the Levin Folk Club as it moved from a coffee bar to a tramping club room, to upstairs in the main street and currently now at the Scottish Society Hall. Anne loves Australian/New Zealand/Irish folk songs, American alt-country and blues. Andrew was the impetus for her to move from being a folk club supporter to a full participant, and he plays backing guitar for her numbers. A diverse group with a broad range of styles within the folk/country genre !
