Owen is a Scottish songwriter with a sense of humour and a neat guitar style. Owen's new album was a nominee for best folk Tui Award last year. Tessa Rain and Jesse Rivest Thursday, April 24, 2008 @ Happy, Wellington 9:00 pm, doors 8:00 pm, $10 @ door Wellington's own songbird Tessa Rain will share two concert evenings with West Canadian singer-songwriter Jesse Rivest in April. Performances from either Tessa or Jesse are long overdue, with Tessa's most recent show in early 2007, and Jesse having yet to dedicate a New Zealand concert to his music. Both artists are excited to reveal new (and share old) songs from their guitar-based repertoires. Tessa Rain will be performing songs from her collection entitled Dirt Poems. Written largely while walking the backblocks of the South Island, this project is as yet unrecorded. The music is meditative and introspective, and is at times a call-and-answer between breathy vocals and stripped-back, nylon-string guitar. There are also hints of dark urban lullabies, and the occasional nod to what Tessa describes as "Alt-Hicksville Moonshine Rock." Tessa was a member of both seasons of LOOP's successful Fly My Pretties, and her song Funny Shadow was published in Taika Waititi's recent feature film Eagle vs Shark (Miramax Films). Two years after releasing his latest LP Seventeen Oh-Two Oh-Six, and nine years after his first EP The Way Things Were, Jesse Rivest is enjoying his current residency in Wellington. After arriving in late 2006, Jesse ventured "over the ditch" for a four-city tour of Australia, and since then has been writing and showcasing new songs in Wellington. Although he has absorbed much of the city's culture, his song style and content draws mostly from his home of Canada, where folk/country/blues/rock greats implanted their sounds within him. Jesse delivers scenic songs with next-day melodies, pleasing guitar arrangements (including slide), and compelling rhythm and pace. Happy is located under Latinos Tapas Bar on the corner of Vivian and Tory streets in Wellington.
